Our Psychotherapists are highly experienced and fully registered, and work both privately and in the NHS. We see individuals, couples, families and deal with whole workgroups. Our close relationship with other members of the Clinic team means that there is always easy access to medical support when or if it is needed.
Our brief therapy approaches are characterized by:- Maintenance of a clear, specific treatment focus
- A conscious and conscientious use of time
- Limited goals with clearly defined outcomes
- An emphasis on intervening in the now
- Rapid assessment and integration of assessment within treatment.
Getting started right away has been characterized by some as "ready, fire, aim". Because human change is inevitable, we emphasize your strengths, resources and the importance of presenting complaints. We recognize that most change occurs outside of therapy and that your personal life is more important than therapy.
Maintenance of a clear, specific focus is a distinguishing feature of brief therapy. Multiple problems are given priorities. The therapist helps you stay focused from interview to interview on what you are trying to accomplish in treatment. Confusions about purpose or progress are immediately addressed.
We use time flexibly to meet the demands of a situation, rather than assuming that you necessarily need or want weekly, one hour interviews. Limited goals with clearly defined outcomes are negotiated and defined specifically within problems areas. Observable, specific and defined outcomes are important in order to increase optimism about recognition of success.
We typically assign homework (some specific tasks to do or think about) in order to speed up progress between interviews. As brief therapists, we do not ignore the effects of history or biology on problem development. We make rapid connections from the past to the present, because now is where change occurs. We recognize that many people are quite satisfied with "symptom relief" and will leave treatment when this is achieved. |
