Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I consult an Osteopath?

During your first visit, a full case-history of your symptoms and medical history will be taken, followed by an examination using medical, orthopaedic, neurological and osteopathic tests where appropriate.

Suitability for osteopathic treatment will then be discussed and a treatment programme will be prepared.

What is Osteopathy?

In 1892, the American School of Osteopathy was opened in Kirksville, Missouri, by the founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, who developed Osteopathic manipulation after curing himself of headaches by removing the board from a swing and resting his neck against the rope!

Osteopathy, as practised today, is a method of diagnosis and treatment that is primarily concerned with structural and mechanical failures of the body i.e. the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that lead to pain and disability.

Through working to correct mechanical dysfunction using a variety of techniques including: deep tissue massage, joint mobilisation, muscle energy techniques, and spinal adjustments, the Osteopath aims to restore balance to the body and thus alleviate the pain.
