Preventing Flight-Related Deep Vein Thrombosis
Is there a link between deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and flying? - We think there is, but read on, follow the links, and judge for yourself!
DVT occurs when blood in the deep veins of the calf muscles and lower leg flows sluggishly and eventually clots. This causes pain and swelling in the short term, a risk of sudden death arising from clots breaking off and travelling through the bloodstream to the heart and lungs, and long term damage to leg veins resulting in reduced circulation and sometimes skin ulceration.
